  • Nature and seriousness of the offence
  • Time elapsed
  • Frequency/pattern of behaviour
  • Relevance to the role
  • Level of supervision required
  • Evidence of rehabilitation

The core decision is always:
“Does this pose any risk to children?”Targeted Training & Risk ReductionWhere appropriate, we implement additional safeguarding controls, including:

  • Targeted training linked to the DBS disclosure
  • Reinforcement of:
    • Safeguarding awareness
    • Professional boundaries
    • Code of conduct
  • Increased supervision (if required)
  • Clear behaviour expectations

  • Immediate internal safeguarding procedure is followed
  • Referral made to:
    • LADO (Local Authority Designated Officer)
    • Police (if required)
    • Ofsted (notifiable incidents)

We follow statutory safeguarding reporting requirements at all timesRecord Keeping & AuditWe maintain:

  • Secure staff files with all vetting documents
  • Recorded risk assessments

  • Children’s home regulations and safeguarding frameworks

We ensure:

  • Children are protected by rigorous checks
  • Staff are continuously monitored
  • Decisions are risk-assessed and evidence-based
  • A strong safeguarding culture is embedded at all levels

Additional Safeguarding: DBS Disclosures & Risk ManagementWhere a staff member has information disclosed on their Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) that is not considered a safeguarding concern, we follow a structured and proportionate approach.

  • If the matter is minor, non-safeguarding related, and occurred some time ago, it does not automatically prevent employment
  • Instead, we complete a detailed written risk assessment

Risk Assessment Process (In Detail)Our risk assessments consider:

  • The nature of the offence
  • How long ago it occurred
  • Whether there is a pattern of behaviour
  • Relevance to the role (e.g. admin vs direct care)
  • Evidence of rehabilitation and changed behaviour

This ensures decisions are fair, evidence-based, and centred on child safetyTargeted Training & SupportWhere appropriate, we strengthen safeguarding further by:

  • Providing additional training linked to the disclosure
  • Reinforcing:
    • Professional boundaries
    • Safeguarding awareness
    • Expected conduct and behaviour

    For example:

  • If an issue relates to judgement → additional professional conduct training
  • If it relates to conflict → behaviour management or communication training

 Ongoing MonitoringFollowing any disclosure:

  • The staff member is subject to increased supervision (if required)
  • Their DBS status continues to be monitored via the Update Service
  • Regular reviews are carried out to ensure continued suitability

Important safeguarding boundaryEven with this approach:

  • Any concerns involving harm to children, safeguarding risk, or serious offences remain non-negotiable and disqualifying
  • Risk assessment is only used where it is safe and appropriate to do so
